Meet the Owners
John Minahan is a partner of Blackdog Stone & Landscape, where he oversees daily operations and project execution. In 2015, John partnered with founder of Blackdog Builders Todd Evans to launch and build the Stone & Landscape division, establishing the craftsmanship standards, systems, and field leadership that continue to define the company today.
John grew up on an eighty-five-acre fruit farm in upstate New York, where hard work and land stewardship were part of daily life. While attending the University of Vermont, he apprenticed under a master stonemason in Warren, Vermont, learning the artistry, discipline, and traditional techniques of New England–style stonework. He later earned a degree in Community Development and Economics in 2002.
After relocating to Park City, Utah, John spent years building high-quality stonework and landscapes throughout the region before helping expand Blackdog into a full-service stone and landscape operation. His leadership is grounded in hands-on experience, disciplined execution, and a deep respect for materials, process, and people.
In 2005, Todd Evans founded Blackdog Builders, naming the company in honor of the beloved family black lab, Susie. With vision, heart, and an unwavering commitment to quality, Todd grew Blackdog into one of the most respected building companies in the region.
Todd’s connection to Park City ran deep. His great-grandfather, a Swedish immigrant and miner, laid down roots in Park City, where Todd’s grandmother became a first-generation Parkite. That same pioneering spirit lived on in Todd.
After earning his degree from the University of Utah, Todd co-founded Boardwalk Remodeling in Salt Lake City with two fraternity brothers. For nearly two decades, they built a successful business together before Todd sold his shares and launched Blackdog Builders in April 2005.
Susie, the family’s loyal black lab, inspired the name and logo. She remained a cherished part of the company culture until her passing at the age of 14. “Nobody can replace Susie,” Todd once said. “We encourage our team to bring their dogs to the office so I can get my dog fix.”
Susie may have inspired the name, but the family legacy grew even stronger when Todd’s daughter, Amanda Evans, joined the team, bringing her talents in marketing, sales, and design to the company.
Family was at the heart of everything Todd built. “We work hard to maintain a family atmosphere,” he said. “We have a Blackdog philosophy — we mentor one another, we work as a team, and we lead with honesty, integrity, and respect. Whether it’s our clients, subcontractors, or local inspectors — everyone we work with is treated like family.”
On May 9, 2025, Todd passed away in a tragic accident at the age of 60. Though his loss is deeply felt, his legacy lives on in Blackdog Builders — a company rooted in community, guided by values, and now proudly led by Amanda, who is committed to carrying her father’s vision forward.
Meet the Namesake
Blackdog Builders, Inc. is named after Todd Evans’ beloved dog, Susie. Susie was a black lab, with us from 2000-2014. She was loved by many. Through the completion of many projects by Blackdog companies, her legacy will continue. This original photograph became the Blackdog logo when the company was founded in 2005.
